NOTE: These certification "forms" are mutually independent. Anybody can be certified in any one, two, or all three forms, and no single form is dependent on having any of the others.
1. At all forms of certification, the certificant is expected to be able to:
Give meanings for all 78 cards
Give some method of extracting shades of meaning from cards (such as elemental dignities or reversals)
Describe a short spread (10 minute reading).
Describe a long spread (30-40 minute reading)
Given example readings from both spreads.
Have a basic knowledge of currently accepted Tarot history (such as from the TarotL document).
Subscribe to the Association's Code of Ethics.
1. A Professional Tarot Reader is certified to read Tarot for paying clients.
2. In addition to the basic requirements, a Professional Tarot Reader is expected to demonstrate that s/he has performed {number to be determined} professional readings {the definition of which is to be determined} (or has been reading professionally on a continuing basis for {time period to be determined}), and can give satisfactory answers to questions involving difficulties found in Tarot readings {to be determined}.
1. A Professional Tarot Instructor is certified to teach Tarot to students.
2. In addition to the basic requirements, a Professional Tarot Instructor is expected to demonstrate that s/he has instructed {number to be determined} students in reading the Tarot (or has been teaching professionally on a continuing basis for {time period to be determined}), and can present an acceptable curriculum for teaching reading the Tarot, which should include teaching the students to be able to pass the Basic Requirements (except for the code of ethics), the basis of the Tarot cards (and how more than one deck follows that basis), a method for reading for one's self, and how to handle difficulties found in tarot readings.
1. A certified Tarot scholar is certified as an authority to be consulted as an expert on the Tarot itself.
2. In addition to the basic requirements, a Professional Tarot Scholar is expected to demonstrate a knowledge of the history of the Tarot, of the symbolism used in Tarot decks, of how the meanings of the cards have been derived, the thought behind {numbers to be determined} of Tarot Decks and Tarot Books. In addition, there should be some sort of publishing requirement, such as a book published by a non-vanity press, articles in major occult journals or minor occult journals that are recognized by the Association as being editorially selective.
